Ideas for Workshops

One of the aims of WPQ is to broaden our skills - to that end, could members make suggestions about the skills, tutors or workshops they would like to attend over 2014. Please come with your suggestions next week.

We have a few inhouse workshop ideas for Thursday mornings - Sandra will be demonstrating the Clam shells block design in June 2013 (date to be confirmed), and the sew and flip method/string piecing method using foundation fabric for making new fabric and scrappy designs has also been suggested for July 2013. Details will be confirmed.

may all your seams be straight!

The Quilters with their Winning Quilts - 2013

(click on the pictures for a closer view)

Here's Wendy with her beautiful Quilt Linen and Lime, which won the viewers choice for 2013.

Wendy described her quilt as follows:

This queen-sized quilt is predominantly made with Japanese Yuwa fabrics of linen, cotton and linen/cotton mix. It was designed by Julie Wallace of the Quilters Barn in Loch Victoria as a block of the month quilt over a 13 month program. It has a fresh, clean style made using the fusible webbing technique and all hand appliquéd with additional borders by moi to personalise it.

Narelle Nutley’s exquisite professional  quilting adds relief, movement and individuality to each block.

At last a quilt for my own bed!!

The Members choice for 2013 was won by Judy and her stunning quilt Vesuvius.

Here's how Judy described her quilt:

This scrap quilt is my original design using a modified version of the ‘stack and slash’ pattern.

The pattern pieces are arranged to achieve shading from light to dark, with black strips inserted. I over-dyed commercial fabrics to achieve the colours required.

The border and binding are colour-washed to blend with the body of the quilt.

Quilted by Narelle Nutley of Mystral Quilting Services.

Congratulations ladies!

Quilt Show Raffle Quilts

Value of 2013 Raffle Quilts
Anyone who crafts and sews will appreciate the time and effort that goes into making a quilt - from selecting or designing a pattern, selecting and trialling fabric combinations, not to mention the construction and finishing of the quilt.
WPQ organises to have the NSW Quilt Guild value the quilts we make for our Show raffle. We do this to provide not only the public but our members with an idea of the true value of a quilt. So often of course we cannot expect to sell one of our quilts for anything like its true value.
This year Circle of Friends ( a double bed quilt made with traditional style blocks and colours and made by a number of members) was valued at $2,000; and Flower Power (nine patch and squares, colour washed and using many Kaffe Fassett fabrics) was valued at $3,300. Both quilts were professionally quilted.

Quilt Show at Wauchope - 6 May 2013

Our Biennial Quilt Show held from 12 to 14 April 2013 at the Wauchope Showground was an outstanding success, and brought together sewists from far and wide. There were 112 quilts of all sizes on display - and included traditional styles, art quilts and modern interpretations of hand and machine quilting. We were complimented on the variety of quilts on display and the other "bits and bobs" made by Members.

The Show gives us an opportunity to raise funds for selected charities and this year Members chose the Port Macquarie Hospital Breast Cancer Support Unit and the national support group for women undergoing cancer treatment, Look Good ... Feel Better.  Above is a picture of the entry to the Show displaying our 2 beautiful raffle quilts - Circle of Friends and Flower Power.
Each Show we ask visitors to select their favourite quilt and this year we asked Members to do the same. The winner of the Viewers Choice was Wendy Jones and the Members Choice was a quilt by Judy McEwan.
